Jeep’s significantly downsized Cherokee made its debut for 1984. Called XJ internally, it ditched its predecessor’s body-on-frame layout in favor of unibody construction to offer a more comfortable ride on the pavement, though it remained exceptionally capable off-road. It was a risky bet, but it paid off: the XJ nearly doubled Jeep’s retail sales in 1984, and it remained available in the U.S. until 2001.
Power comes from a 4.0-liter inline-6 engine, rated at 190 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. Output is sent to the rear or all four wheels via a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Known Flaws
The attached Carfax history report indicates that this Cherokee was involved in an accident with another vehicle in November 2021 that resulted in “minor damage” to the front and the undercarriage. The report adds that the Jeep was inspected “after an accident or another incident” in January 2004.
